ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to evaluate the genetic parameters of the biometric characteristics of the fruit and seeds of C. ebano. The investigation was carried out in Montería, Córdoba (Colombia); ten trees were selected and from each, ten fruits taken at random. Variance analysis and estimation of genetic parameters for nine traits were carried out: fresh fruit weight, fruit length, fruit width, fruit thickness, number of seeds/fruit, weight of seeds by fruit, weight of one seed, volume of one seed and density of one seed. Statistical differences (p < 0.01) were detected between trees, for all traits except for width of the fruit and weight of a seed; denoting the existence of genetic variability between trees for fruit weight, fruit length, fruit thickness, number of seeds and density of a seed. The weight and length of the fruit presented the highest family heritability and narrow sense heritability (h2 Fam > 82 % and h2 E> 30 %). The expected genetic gain was greater than 10 % in five of the nine studied traits, and greater than 20 % for number of seeds and weight of seeds (27.31 and 27.87 %, respectively). The traits fruit weight and length could be transmitted to successive generations, with greater chance of success, by phenotypic selection of trees.

RESUMEN

CASE: A 40-year-old Colombian woman presented with a 7-year history of progressive lower-limb pain. Sclerosis of the diaphyseal tibia and femur was observed in her latest x-ray images. A narrowing of the medullary canal is observed in Camurati-Engelmann disease (CED), a rare and progressive diaphyseal dysplasia that was confirmed in this patient by genetic testing. Medical treatment was unsuccessful; thus, surgical treatment consisted of decompression by drilling of the medullary canal was performed, achieving successful pain release. CONCLUSION: Surgical treatment should be considered for patients with CED when the medical treatment is unsuccessful because doing so reduces bone overgrowth, leading to pain relief.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: The concept of global cardiovascular risk is not usually well understood by patients in consultation. METHODS: This was a multicenter, prospective, randomized, open clinical trial of one-year duration to evaluate the effectiveness in reducing global cardiovascular risk with an intervention aimed at high-risk patients to improve information on the cardiovascular risk compared to the usual care. The intervention was focused on providing information about cardiovascular risk in a more understandable way, explaining the best practices to reduce cardiovascular risk, and tailoring information to the individual. RESULTS: Four-hundred and sixty-four subjects participated in the study; 59.3% were men, and the mean age was 61.0 (SD 8.0) years. Significant reductions in systolic blood pressure (SBP) (-3.12 mmHg), body mass index (BMI) (-0.34 kg/m2), abdominal circumference (-1.24 cm), and REGICOR cardiovascular risk (-0.63) were observed in the intervention group. Overall, no differences in cardiovascular risk score were observed between groups at the end of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS: Providing an easy-to-understand assessment of the cardiovascular risk motivated high-risk patients to adopt a healthier lifestyle and improved cardiovascular risk after one year in the intervention group. Clinicians should assess a patient's baseline understanding of their CV risk using tools other than absolute risk before making treatment recommendations.

The aim of this paper is to present a simplified protocol for immediate installation of a definitive prosthesis over four jaw implants. This was performed on a totally edentulous female patient of 72 years. The treatment was initiated with the preparation of a conventional removable prosthesis until the dental articulation test from which a multifunctional guide was obtained. At surgery, four Strong SW (SIN®, Sao Paulo, Brazil) implants were installed between mental foramen. Mini-Abutments were screwed and the impression was made using the guide. On the second day the metal structure was tested with the dental articulation in wax and on the third day the definitive prosthesis was installed with manual torque. The suture was removed 10 days after surgery, and the torque was given to prosthetic screws (10 N/cm). The patient was followed up every 6 months, with no complications so far.

Aim. To determine if variables like rurality, measured with the new rurality index from the Latin American Centre for Rural Development (Rimisp), and gender are related with academic performance in the form of the average final mark of the first semester. Subjects and methods. Kinesiology students from cohorts 2010 and 2011 were assessed. Data of gender and rurality were associated with academic performance. Results. There is no relation of statistical significance between academic performance and gender. However, there is a relation of statistical significance (p = 0.05) between the rurality index and academic performance during the first academic semester of the kinesiology program at University of Santo Tomás-Talca. Conclusion. Students coming from rural areas (typology 1 and 2) surpassed their urban counterparts and that gender is not a relevant factor to be considered in academic performance (AU)
